Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice: Does one name have it all?
Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice: Does one name have it all?
Jan 28, 2026 8:42 PM

This week’s Berry Question of the Week comes from a Kansas mom named Amy, who is excitedly awaiting the arrival of a daughter to add to her trio of well named boys. Problem is, she’s waited so long to have a little girl that she feels the name she’s looking for can be nothing short of perfect. She writes:

My husband and I are having our first daughter after three boys and several years of trying for another without any luck. So this baby girl feels sooo special and I want her to have a name that’s perfect as she’ll definitely be our last.

The problem is that my husband and I just can’t agree on what we want. I have looked at SO many names and I feel like I’m running out of ideas- and I can’t even seem to stick with one style.

I like sweet and feminine, modern and spunky, hip and vintage, and word names. I can say I want something that’s not too common and that I’m not a fan of hybrid or invented names. My husband’s style just seems to lean to “no”. Aargh.

I’m not too worried about sibsets because I already messed that up  : ) My sons are Jake, Delano (Duh-la-no) and Elijah. My husband is Native American with a very unusual Irish name, and I have a very plain and common name. Her middle name will most likely be the Navajo three syllable word for beautiful, Nizhoni, though that’s not set in stone, and our last name is two syllables and starts with J.

Here are some of the names we’ve considered:

Veruca (my only concern with this one is the Willie Wonka association. And that a Verrucae is a type of wart)

Juniper (my personal favorite so far)

Summer (hubby actually suggested it but I’m not a huge fan)

And that’s all we can come up with that isn’t a complete no for one of us. I did see a name that someone suggested for another Berry that I absolutely loved – Ever August Rose. Love it. Unusual, feminine, feels poetic, word name, nature name. But… A girl at work has a daughter named Ever and she is not fond of the idea of sharing that one!

So please, please …help me find the name that clicks in just the right way!

What do you think, Berries? Can you help Amy find a name special enough for her only daughter?

If you have a baby name dilemma you’d like to have considered as a Berry Question of the Week, send it to [email protected].  Thanks!
