Sundance Catalog Names

At this time of year, catalogs flood the house every day – the poor mail deliverer! – only to be promptly thrown into the recycling bin.

One of the few exceptions is the Sundance Catalog. It’s not as if I ever order anything from there, though if my husband is reading this, he should know that I’d be very happy to find any of their earrings under the Christmas tree.

It’s more the image and the lifestyle that attract me, at least for the length of time it takes to eat a peanut butter sandwich. Relaxed yet chic, feminine as well as outdoorsy, the Sundance Catalog depicts the kind of woman I’d be if only I spent my time rambling around a ranch rather than typing on a sofa.

What does any of this have to do with baby names? As usual, everything, as the Sundance Catalog includes lots of girls’ names and also nature names that are in keeping with its cosmopolitan Western bourgeois bohemian aesthetic.

Here, for example, are some of the girls’ names Sundance uses for blouses, boots, and bracelets — but that might work just as well for your own little cosmopolitan cowgirl:

And here are some nature and other word names found in its pages that convey the Sundance aesthetic:

Do you ever find name inspiration, or just entertainment, in catalogs, Sundance or other?

Modern Girls’ Names: Zhuri, Marlowe, and Vale
Feb 13, 2025
By Abby Sandel, Appellation Mountain Is the way we name our daughters changing? The way we name our sons in 2014 feels different.  For years we relied on Biblical favorites with a few hardy Germanic go-tos mixed in.  But since the 1990s, we’ve seen names like Tyler, Mason, and Jayden...
Girl Baby Names: Something Old, Something New
Feb 13, 2025
By Abby Sandel, Appellation Mountain The good news about naming a girl: the options are limitless. The bad news about naming a girl: the options?  Limitless!  How do you choose? In the US, around two-thirds of all newborn girls are given a Top 1000 name.  We play it safe with...
The Two Aggies: Agatha and Agnes unbuttoned
Feb 13, 2025
By Linda Rosenkrantz For what seems like forever, this pair of sainted sister names, Agnes and Agatha, have seemed like the quintessential starched, buttoned-up, high-lace-collared, mauve-dressed Great-Great-Grandmother appellations. I’d like to propose that we let the unbuttoning commence. Agnes has a bit of a leg up on several counts: 1....
Bye-bye, Meghan.  So long, Marisa.  Girl names leaving the Top 1000
Feb 13, 2025
by Ren Williams Many of the stories about the recent US Popular Names list focus on the names at the top and on the rise: the Sophias and Jacobs, Khaleesis and Jayceons of the baby name world. But, just as some names go up, others must come down. The following...
